Endorsement: Kathy Smith for Sully School Board
October 24, 2007
A parent and a former teacher, Kathy Smith was elected to the School Board in 2002 after the Sully School Board representative at the time, Gary Reese, was elected to the General Assembly. In her five years on the board, she has served one year as president of the board, and has earned the respect of her fellow board members.
Smith says she wants to keep the work of the School Board focused on education and student achievement. Smith has been an advocate of full day kindergarten and adding elementary school foreign language instruction.
Smith helped lower class size in some of the largest classes when she first came on the board. Rather than trying to reduce class sizes across the board, an unaffordable goal, Smith suggested targeting the largest classes for reduction and improvement. This sort of approach could be important in the coming year, and possibly could be applied to the earliest school bus pickups as an incremental approach to later start times as well.
We have heard complaints that Smith is not always responsive to her constituents. Some say she hasn’t listened to them when they have appeared at the board to express opinions; others say she hasn’t made herself available to meet with them after several requests.
This is something that she can remedy, and it will be critical to do so in a difficult budget year with controversial redistricting looming. In particular, Smith should meet with the group that advocates for later high school start times, SLEEP, whose leaders have invested a remarkable amount of time at the School Board.
Her opponent, John Litzenberger, a high school coach and aviation expert, is a civic activist with a love of the schools. He has many good ideas, including a need to develop a pay program that would keep outstanding teachers in the classroom. We look forward to Litzenberger’s continued involvement, but we give the nod to Smith’s experience.
