Letter to the Editor:
Kathy Smith's PTA leadership is vital
By Nancy Knighton, Fair Oaks

Why am I writing a letter to the editor? It is a first for me!
It's because Kathy Smith and I have something in common that you
should knowabout. It will help you realize one of the main reasons
why she is the most qualified person for continuing to serve as
the Fairfax County School Board representative for Sully District.
So what is it that we have in common? We share the common experience
of having been PTA president in elementary, middle and high schools.
It is a privilege, a challenge and an opportunity to make a difference
in the lives of our children.
Kathy and I are ardent supporters of public education. Nothing
can compare or duplicate the unique insight gained from beingin
schools, as PTA president, day after day, week after week and year
after year. Nothing can replace the wisdom gained by working with
all levels of school staff.
This means working with the principal to resolve issues, to share
joys and voice our concerns. It includes working closely with the
counselors and administrators, learning the concerns of teachers,
seeing the everyday trials and tribulations of the secretaries and
even coming to understand the custodians' concerns while working
together to prepare for the many PTA school activities.
A PTA presidency offers a truly multidimensional way to experience
every aspect of the life of schools! As PTA president, Kathy and
I KNOW the schools. We have been in the role of PTA president as
our children proceeded through the school system because this is
our passion.
This is why Kathy is THE MAN, oops—THE WOMAN—for the
job!
Please join me in re-electing Kathy Smith on Nov. 4.
Nancy Knighton is a past PTA president of Navy Elementary School,
Franklin Middle School and Chantilly High School.
