Kathy Smith Report Card is All A's

To the Editor:
We are busy. Our three children attend Fairfax County schools, and
they all
need to be some place else, at the same time. So it's no wonder,
occasionally, we find little sense in this cookie-cutter, fast-paced,
techno-powered world of ours. And, it seems every year there is
more to do
as school starts. "You need Chucks?" I wore Chucks, and
that was 30 years ago! "Those pants? They have no waistline!
I am not paying twice the price for half the pants!" Throw
in a few back-to- school nights, a hurricane, power outages, etc.,
and you will find me down and out, on the couch, in no time. Is
there any good news out there in Fairfax County?
If we take a closer look at our Fairfax County schools we find
a lot of good, to report: My children are excited about the schools
they will attend in Fairfax County this year. The schools are less
crowded. And I am very proud of the teachers and faculty who provide
the best for our children. The talent and hard work of our Fairfax
County educators and administrators is of the highest professional
caliber. We should all ask ourselves, What makes Fairfax County
so desirable? Education in Fairfax County has always been one of
our highest priorities. We have all profited from our children getting
the best from our county's educational system. If we agree education
is a very valuable asset to Fairfax County residents, we certainly
should reward those that have proven to be instrumental in the success
of our educational system. Kathy Smith has dedicated herself to
making our educational system very successful. Kathy Smith's devotion
to education is a local story of heroic proportion.
Kathy has years in the classroom, years of PTA presidencies, and
many other school activities to her credit. Kathy is all heart and
action. She demonstrates professionalism daily. With her election
to the Fairfax County School Board, Kathy has been able to make
even more of a positive difference in Fairfax education. Kathy has
embraced her role on the School Board with the formation of new
committees, sensible tax cuts, and productive achievements in school
safety and operations. Her goals include reduced class sizes, competitive
teacher salaries and fair and impartial review processes of all
educational programs by an Inspector General. And much to her credit
she is a real listener, not a blind political party drummer. This
November we may use political machines to vote, but hopefully we
will not elect political machines. Kathy Smith demonstrates exceptional
leadership.
It has been an excellent first term. Kathy gets a grade of A+ ...
and that grade is not easy to get from this Republican. When I review
Kathy Smith's approach to improving and leading Fairfax education,
a political agenda or a platform, is not a relevant factor. I look
at what is best for our kids. This November, Kathy gets my vote
again. I thank all the Fairfax county teachers and administrators
who serve us all so well. Your professionalism
is noticed! Fairfax educators, thank you very much. (Our local PTA
Web site is http://www.fccpta.org).
PTA starts with parents.
